Crisis: You've got to laugh

2008-10-17 00:00

Have you heard the joke about the difference between a pigeon and a banker?

The answer: A pigeon can still put a deposit on a Porsche!

There are a host of jokes currently doing the rounds regarding the ongoing financial crisis, and South Africa’s self-proclaimed online guide to money,www.justmoney.co.za, has compiled some:

• What is the definition of optimism? An investment banker ironing five shirts on a Sunday night;

• The definition of a bank manager: a person who will lend you an umbrella when the sun is shining, and then ask for it back when it starts to rain.

• 99% of bankers give the rest a bad name.

Two satirical videos on www.wallstreetandtech.com’s blog page dated October 3 are quite appealing. The first shows a group of well-dressed American bankers and accountants standing outside a posh office block. When a man with a Mexican accent, who at first glance would be regarded as an illegal immigrant, parks alongside them in a van, they fight over the limited “casual labour” spots available. They are then packed into the back of the van and hauled off to work.

In the other, British comedians John Bird and John Fortune explain the financial crisis — a funny, thought-provoking insight into how the markets operate — where traders are driven by greed, fear, panic and stupidity.
