Crowd trouble mars Carling Cup

2009-10-29 00:00

LONDON — Barnsley were counting the cost yesterday after eight fans were arrested during their Carling Cup defeat to Manchester United.

Catering staff had to barricade themselves in a store room for 25 minutes as fans broke in and stole cash from the till and food from the shelves.

Stewards around the pitch had food thrown at them, while two fans invaded the pitch near the end of the game, which United won 2-0. Police were pelted with bottles, and dogs were used to drive fans back from the pitch as trouble flared in the north stand.

“No one was injured during this time but one officer suffered a minor facial injury,” read apolice statement.

At 11 pm two more people were arrested after fans jumped onto railway tracks to delay the departure of the Barnsley to Sheffield train.

A Barnsley spokesman said: “A complaint has been made to the police and we will be taking a look at CCTV footage of the incident before we can comment further.”

The tie between West Ham United and Millwall in the last round saw widespread fighting on the streets around the stadium and three separate pitch invasions.
