Crown Gospel: Durban-born producer wins Lifetime Achievement Award

SOUTH African gospel artists were honoured for their contribution to the music industry at the prestigious Crown Gospel Music Awards at Durban’s International Convention Centre on Sunday.

A big winner of the night was Durban-born gospel producer and Joyous Celebration co-founder Lindelani Mkhize, who won the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Mkhize said, “For me it is not a case of winning, but it is about being acknowledged for my involvement and contribution to the gospel industry.

“It was a humbling and pleasant experience and I am happy that I accepted the award in my hometown.

“I was caught by surprise because Joyous Celebration was performing in Johannesburg and I had to rush off the stage to the airport because my wife set the whole thing up.

“She organised everything and I thought I was rushing to another appointment only be driven to the awards. It was the first time in my life that I was lost for words,” said Mkhize.

Obrigado singer Solly Mahlangu won Best Gospel Song, Best Male Gospel Artist and the Best Gospel Artist.

Swazi Dlamini’s Gospel Meets Jazz album saw her walk away with the Best Jazz Award. Hlengiwe Mhlaba won the Best Female Gospel Award. Husband and wife Nqubeko Mbatha and Ntokozo Mbambo took home the awards for Best Gospel Producer and Classic of All Times.

KZN gospel hip-hop group Fifty 50 Family won their their first award on the night. The group trumped fellow artists Sir J Africa, Peak Aye and Themba Simelane to be named Best Rap Gospel act.

Said spokesperson Siya Xulu, “We are very happy about winning the award because a lot of work goes into our music. We are showing the youth that hip-hop is not only about the fashion and girls, but that you can also incorporate gospel in it.”
