Curtains for dumb crook

2014-10-28 00:00

A BURGLAR who broke into a store in the city centre, walked out with his loot straight into the arms of waiting police officers.

The burglar broke into Capital Curtains in Chief Albert Luthuli Street on Friday evening, unaware that police were close by. He tried to make off with curtains worth thousands of rands. But the ill-fated thief never made it far with the items as he was arrested while leaving the store through the same window he broke to get in.

Fazil Moosa, the business owner, said the man had used loose paving on the road to smash through the glass window to gain access. Unfortunately for him, as he broke into the store, he was spotted by a police van patrolling the area.

The break-in also set off the store’s alarm system prompting the security company to call Moosa.

“The police saw him go in, and as he was getting out through the same window, the police were there waiting for him and he was arrested,” said Moosa. “He smashed the glass window worth about R2 500 and tried to make off with merchandise worth about R2 500 … He was unable to take the merchandise with him,” said Moosa.

The would-be thief was due to make his curtain call in court yesterday.
