Cwele: her job as a nurse in the balance

2011-09-06 00:00

THE South African Nursing Council is considering how to deal with the wife of the State Security Minister Siyabonga Cwele for internal proceedings by the council.

This follows Sheryl Cwele’s conviction and sentencing to 12 years for drug dealing by the high court in Pietermaritzburg with her Nigerian business associate, Frank Nabolisa.

She was fired by the Hibiscus Municipality as the director of community and health services. Cwele has an Honours degree in nursing and has spent several years working as a nurse.

Advocate Job Malobola of the South African Nursing ouncil’s legal department said the committee cannot sit as one of its members is in hospital.

After the trial state prosecutor Ian Cooke sent the records to the council to decide whether Cwele can be allowed to continue working as a nurse.

Malobola said a preliminary investigating committee can recommend an inquiry “where [Cwele] can come before the profession conduct committee, to defend herself”.

Mvuseni Ngubane, Cwele’s lawyer, confirmed that a letter was received from the nursing council and that he notified it that Cwele is appealing her conviction.
