Cycling: Amashova will be ‘bigger and better’

2009-07-02 00:00

THIS year’s Amashova National Cycle Classic race promises to be bigger and better. At the launch in Durban, race organiser Annie Batchelder said the 2009 race, which takes place from October 17-18, is set to have record entries.

The race will start in Pietermaritzburg and end at Durban’s Suncoast Casino and Entertainment World on North Beach. “Having MTN as a partner is a huge boost for the event, which is now in its 23rd year, making it one of the most enduring cycling events in South Africa. We look forward to another thrilling cycle race,” she said.

Batchelder said the event will attract thousands of cyclist enthusiasts to the city.

She said MTN’s sponsorship has enabled the race to be advertised during the Tour de France for 21 days.

Ethekwini Mayor Obed Mlaba said the race is a great way to market Durban. “Cycling is a popular sport in Durban and as Africa’s sports capital, we welcome events such as the Amashova that allow us to showcase our abilities.”

Anthony Garstang, senior manager for MTN sponsorship, said their sponsorship reaffirms their commitment to cycling in SA. “We have come on board to contribute to an initiative that already boasts a rich and colourful history spanning more than two decades,” he said.
