Cycling: Dad, daughter hurt in pile-up

2009-11-02 00:00

A MAN and his daughter were injured in a bicycle pile-up while cycling in the midlands yesterday morning. The man was critically injured and was airlifted to hospital, attached to a ventilator.

It is believed that the two were riding side by side when they negotiated a bend on the R617 near Bulwer. One collided with the other, causing them to fall on top of each other.

Netcare 911 spokesman Jeff Wicks said: “The woman sustained possible head and spinal injuries, as well as fractures to her left arm and hand. … Her father was initially stable at the scene and it is thought that a head injury caused him to present with seizures.”

Advanced life support paramedics had to insert a breathing tube and summon a helicopter to get him to hospital quickly. Both are now in a stable condition, Wicks said.
