Cyclist finds police records dumped in Hilton forest

2008-09-16 00:00

A cyclist this weekend found a pile of police dockets and documents that had been dumped in the forest near Grace College in Hilton.

The Witness was informed of the find, went to investigate and found file covers of dockets and fingerprint forms.

Many of the documents that had been there when the cyclist found them over the weekend had been blown away by strong winds.

SAPS spokesman Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram said the documents were destined for removal by a recycling company, but the rubbish was instead dumped in the forest. It was not clear who was responsible.

“These documents were discarded and spoiled and destined for destruction. Unfortunately, they were erroneously dumped at the wrong place and have since been removed,” he said.

He said that a fingerprint form found among the documents was discarded due to errors and excessive use of fingerprint ink, which would not be acceptable at the criminal record centre.

“The docket cover is also a spoiled document and does not represent any case docket. This can be confirmed by the absence of the case number and other particulars required to be completed,” Budhram said.
