Cyclists follow Amashova route to raise funds

2012-10-12 00:00

ONLY days ahead of the Amashova cycle event, 37 cyclists yesterday pedalled part of its route — which was a mere fraction of their journey between Vereeniging and Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium.

“We’re more or less following the Comrades Marathon route,” said organiser Arthur Doyle, in the back-up vehicle.

Part of the route of Sunday’s ride follows that of the Comrades Marathon.

An initiative of the Vereeniging Rotary Club, the event is in its 14th year and aims to raise around R100 000 for the charities the service organisation supports in the Vaal Triangle.

The pod of cyclists left Vereeniging on Sunday, crossed the Free State and Oliviershoek Pass, which is almost inaccessible to ordinary vehicle traffic — the road having fallen into decay amid stalled attempts to fix it.

“The bikes could get down but cars have to be very careful,” said Doyle.

The cyclists then headed to Pietermaritzburg along the Midlands Meander.

They would have clocked 634 km by the time they reached their destination yesterday afternoon.

For a handful, it was a journey home after having travelled upcountry to start.

Other cyclists came from Gauteng and Limpopo.
