Cyclist’s stomach ripped

A CYCLIST is recovering in Medi-Clinic’s intensive care unit in Pietermaritzburg after a freak accident in which his stomach was ripped open by a tree branch, exposing his intestines, while he was cycling in a race at the weekend.

The Witness gathers that the 30-year-old cyclist was competing in a cycling regional championship race in the Dalton area when he was injured.

Vanessa Jackson of ER24 said that the cyclist’s stomach was ripped open by a tree branch as he was taking part in the off-road endurance race in Dalton.

“It seems that a tree branch was hanging quite near the trail, and as he passed it, it allegedly ripped straight through his protective motocross gear and then through the tissue of his stomach,” explained Jackson.

She said that the event’s medical services treated him on the scene before ER24 paramedics came to give an extra hand.

“The man was in a severe amount of pain and paramedics were shocked to see that his intestines were actually protruding through the wound.

“They immediately performed preservation techniques of the exposed bowel and they gave him pain medication.

“He was also sedated as he was particularly anxious. He was transported to an awaiting hospital in a serious but stable condition,” said Jackson.

Medi-Clinic’s marketing manager, Reshnee Beekrum, said of the patient:

“His condition is still stable and he is sedated after undergoing surgery,” said Beekrum.
