Cyclone warning issued as Elena threatens KZN

A CYCLONE warning has been issued for KwaZulu-Natal this weekend as tropical storm Elena threatens to make landfall.

Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Nomusa Dube said she had deployed disaster teams to deal with the impending storm.

KwaZulu-Natal last felt the brunt of a tropical cyclone when Cyclone Domoina struck in 1984.

Lucky Makhwedzha from the South African Weather Service in Durban said the Northern KwaZulu-Natal area would experience heavy rains from tomorrow afternoon to evening, with the bad weather spreading down the coast on Sunday.

“On Monday there could be heavy rainfall covering most of the province and there could be a chance of flooding in low-lying areas. The system could start clearing from Tuesday onwards,” he said.

Dube said she was prompted by a warning from the weather service, but urged people not to panic.

“We are not putting the province in a state of panic but we are simply alerting about bad weather. We are in a state of readiness to respond to any possible disaster situation. We want to do all we can to protect lives and property,” she added.
