DA calls for Ngobeni’s immediate suspension

2014-10-04 00:00

POLICE Commissioner Mmamonnye Ngobeni yesterday came in for scathing criticism from Democratic Alliance shadow police minister Dianne Kohler-Barnard, who called for heads to roll.

She said that The Witness’s documents showing that the party had been funded by accused fraudster Thoshan Panday were damning.

“As it seems there is now proof that Ngobeni’s husband’s party was paid for by Panday, there is no way on earth that this woman can be kept on as KZN provincial police commissioner,” she said.

“It is quite obvious that she stood with Panday in the drive to discredit Major-General Johan Booysen and the rest of the entire Cato Manor Serious and Violent Crimes Unit, while there were not one but two criminal cases against him, because of her close personal relationship with him,” Kohler-Barnard alleged.

She said that Ngobeni had been shrouded in controversy, referring to her failure to appear at a disciplinary hearing for Booysen, the suspended boss of the Hawks in KwaZulu-Natal.

“Ngobeni has had a mass of clouds swirling over her head for years, and the fact that she failed to appear at the disciplinary case during which Booysen was completely exonerated, speaks volumes.

“Will this be another case by the National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega where she appoints a provincial commissioner, claiming that she did not know that person faced criminal charges?” she questioned.

She said that she would report the matter to the Independent Police Investigation Directorate (IPID).

“I will immediately report this matter to the IPID, and if Robert McBride finds himself disinclined to investigate this matter, I will personally open a criminal case with the Hawks.

“I will equally send this information to the Minister of Police, and ask that Ngobeni be suspended immediately, pending the outcome of the IPID/and or the Hawks investigation,” Kohler-Barnard said.
