DA cries foul on IEC choice

2015-03-03 00:00

CAPE TOWN — The DA yesterday criticised the ANC after a special advisor of President Jacob Zuma had been recommended as commissioner for the Independent Electorial Commission (IEC).

DA leader Helen Zille said there is clearly a conflict of interest in the recommendation of Vuma Glenton Mashinini, which MPs are expected to rubber-stamp in the National Assembly today. Zille described his nomination as the next step in Zuma’s systematic takeover of government institutions.

The ANC said there were no grounds at all for such “hysterics” from the DA.

Zille had this week written in the DA’s weekly newsletter SA Today there are disturbing trends as the ANC prepares for next year’s municipal elections.

These include the “manipulation” of the IEC and municipal boundaries, as well as the re-allocation of state funds to finance the ANC’s election campaign in the provinces.

ANC spokesperson in Parliament Moloto Motapho said Mashinini’s recommendation as IEC commissioner did not clash with any legislation.

“He did not have a political position in any political party; he was in the civil service,” he said.
