DStv fest of four shows on Darwin

2009-11-23 00:00

VETERAN broadcaster and naturalist, David Attenborough, believes that there has never been a more important time to applaud the brilliance of Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution. He is concerned that, because the theory has become such a part of modern scientific thinking, we are in danger of taking it for granted.

As the host of one of four series about Darwin, titled Charles Darwin And The Tree Of Life, being broadcast on BBC Knowledge (DStv channel 251) from this week, Attenborough, a passionate Darwinian, asks three key questions — How, and why, did Darwin come up with this theory? Why do we think he was right? And, why is it more important now than ever before?

In answering these questions, he takes the viewer on a personal journey which reflects his own life and how he came to understand Darwin’s ideas. Attenborough also travels to key locations around the world, revealing the stories that underpin his own passion for the subject of evolution and searching for the latest evidence that further strengthens Darwin’s theory.

Charles Darwin And The Tree Of Life, will be broadcast on Wednesday at 8.30 pm and is one of four programmes about Darwin on the channel. Viewers can see What Darwin Didn’t Know at 7.30 pm tonight, Darwin’s Struggle – The Evolution Of The Origin Of Species, tomorrow at 7.30 pm and The Genius Of Charles Darwin at 7.30 pm on Wednesday.
