DUT suspends classes at Durban

2014-02-26 00:00

THE Durban University of Technology full-time academic programme at Durban campuses will be suspended today following violent student protests this week.

The institution’s management are hoping the situation returns to normal tomorrow.

Yesterday, the university was granted a high court interdict against the Student Representative Council and any other students involved in the protest action.

“The court order offers protection to the university from further protests, violence, intimidation and disruptions. The court interdict covers all campuses,” DUT’s vice chancellor and principal Professor Ahmed Bawa said.

He said the safety and security of students and staff was essential.

“And now that the SRC has broken its agreement with the university, DUT has to take special measures to protect its community and property.”

He said the university’s stance to suspend lectures was their way of stabilising things in Durban. Classes at the Midlands centre at the Riverside and Indumiso campuses will continue as normal.
