DUT woos firms for new bursary

2009-03-26 00:00

THE Durban University of Technology (DUT) is launching a student bursary fund that seeks to aggressively source partners and individuals to help fund disadvantaged students.

DUT’s executive director of corporate affairs, Nomonde Mbadi, said the bursary is intended to assist students that are academically successful but who are unable to finance their studies.

“An ideal situation would be if a company funds a student. They also place the student for experiential training. If the relationship cultivated is successful, the company might be able to employ the students. And if this is successful, we would have succeeded in our mission.”

The launch of the student bursary fund will take place at the university’s hotel school on the Ritson campus on Thursday, starting at 6 pm.

Mbadi said businesses and individuals are invited to partner with the university in establishing this bursary scheme.

The fund is open to all DUT students as well as prospective students who qualify. The selection of the students will be based on academic merit, but consideration for special circumstances may be taken into account.
