Dad watches helplessly as son, friend drown

2012-04-09 00:00

A TEENAGER and his father’s friend drowned after their canoe capsized off Mzamba Mouth yesterday morning.

Watching helplessly from the beach was Daya Naicker of Port Shepstone, the 14-year-old boy’s father. Later, the bodies of Sebastian Naicker, a Grade Nine pupil at Marburg Secondary School, and Stophelar Dlamini (59) washed up in the surf close to rocks on which their craft had settled. Locals pulled them out of the water.

“It is very sad as the father witnessed the entire incident and was helpless,” said police spokesperson Captain Mlungisi Matibane.

“According to reports the boy’s father and the deceased man were very good friends and used to fish together,” he added.

Netcare 911, Ubuntu Lifeguards and the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) were dispatched to the scene near the Wild Coast Casino Resort.

NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said the canoe appeared to have first been swept up-river before being sucked into the river mouth and capsizing in high water.

Mzamba police have opened an inquest docket.
