The word “Dad” first appeared in writing at the turn of the 15th century although it is probably far older. How it originated is

uncertain, but children in many countries use similar-sounding words for their fathers.

Many scholars believe that it was only in the Neolithic era (that is, between about 10 000 and 4 000 BC) that humans realised that men had a role in

procreation. Before then, it was believed to be a purely female-

engendered phenomenon.

Among primates, it is rare for fathers to take a hands-on role in raising their children. Only humans and a few species of monkeys do so.
