Damage: ‘Witness’ press flooded

2009-01-04 00:00

The Witness was not left unscathed by the violent storm that shook the city on Saturday night.

Large sections of the roof of the press hall in Willowton were blown off, leaving the press exposed to the torrential rain that accompanied the heavy winds.

A full shift was on duty at the time, but there were no injuries.

Yesterday, mopping up operations were under way with the usually bustling press hall being cleaned and then shrouded in tarpaulins as more rain was expected.

So your Witness today may look a little different, and this is because the printing of the printing of the newspaper had to be outsourced to the Independent group, and was printed in Durban.

“The press will be out of commission for some time,” said managing director Piet le Roux, “but we’re just grateful that no one was injured.”

Plans are being made for The Witness, Ilanga, Daily Sun, as well as numerous weekly titles, to be printed with the assistance of Media 24 in Johannesburg, and Africa Web Press and Independent Newspapers in Durban.

“The Witness hasn’t missed the publication of an issue in 163 years of existence, but we would ask that our readers be patient, as deliveries may be later than usual through this period.

“We plan to be fully operational again as soon as possible,” said Le Roux.
