‘Dance’ on fire in the ‘Burrah’

2011-12-02 00:00

PULLING into the ‘Burrah’ tonight is Johannesburg-based pop-rock-indie outfit Dance You’re On Fire.

It’s not one of those names you will easily forget, which prompts the obvious question of the inititiation of the name.

“We were  watching a really bad B-grade horror movie and one guy got set on fire in a club and the DJ shouted: ‘Dance, you’re on fire’,” says drummer Jethro Vlag (24). “So we all got a kick out of that and decided to use it as the band name.”

Vlag and his bandmates Tom Manners (24, vocals and guitar) Adrian Erasmus (27, guitar and keyboard) and Paul van der Walt (30, bass) released their debut album Secret Chiefs this year, which thus far has been a major highlight in the band’s short but highly successful career.

The band’s accomplishments include a stellar performance at Oppikoppi and its second video Michelle reached number one on the DStv music channel, MK. The band also walked away as one of the winners of the MK MVP.

And yet despite all the band’s achievements, Vlag says their greatest reward is performing to an audience which “is really into it and singing along to the songs. There’s really no greater feeling than watching and hearing a crowd go nuts to your music.”

The music fits the category of the easier side of listening, earmarked by acoustic rhythms and melodies, not exactly the kind of association you would envision with a band name such as Dance You’re On Fire.

But Vlag recalls one stand-out incident in the four-piece’s existence: “There was a moshpit going on at one point during our show at Splashy Fen this year,” he says, when probed about any crazy rock ’n roll stories. “I’m sure it’s crazy, but that hardly ever happens, so it was pretty rad.”

The band members all have day jobs, but their hobbies outside of music include PC games.

“Paul has his side project called The Watermark High,” says Vlag. “Adrian likes to philosophise about life and the universe.”

While there are no secrets currently pending for Dance, You’re On Fire, it is common knowledge that it will be releasing a second album in 2012.

The band is also looking towards a tour in Germany. • Catch this four-piece at Cliffy’s tonight, along with Scarlet Hill and Voodoo Child. Doors open at 8 pm. Entrance is R40.
