Dane Madsen triumphs in SA Open

JOHANNESBURG — On an intriguing final day of the South African Open at Glendower Golf Club where the lead changed three times, it was Denmark’s Morten Madsen who came out on top yesterday.

Madsen fired a final round 67 for a 269, 19 under par in total, to claim the win in the co-sanctioned European and Sunshine Tour event.

Madsen, ranked 244th in the world before the victory, finished two clear of locals Jbé Kruger and Hennie Otto on 17 under.

Kruger compiled the round of the day among the chasing pack, but ultimately the glory belonged to Madsen.

The day began with South African Charl Schwartzel racing out to the lead on the front nine, before he found a watery grave at the par-three sixth hole, which led to a triple bogey and effectively ended his challenge.

Any glimmer of hope Schwartzel had was extinguished with a double bogey on the par-four 10th hole.

It was then countryman Otto who took up the mantle, but a double bogey on the par-four 16th handed Madsen the lead.

Madsen — playing in the final group with local favourite Schwartzel — quietly compiled two birdies on his outward nine to return a two under score at the turn.

However, it was three birdies in a four-hole stretch, starting on the 13th hole, that catapulted the 25-year-old to his debut win on the European Tour. With his win, Madsen became only the ninth non-African player to win the second oldest tournament in golf.
