Dangerous rhetoric

2008-01-18 00:00

The thwarted prosecution of Scorpions Gauteng head, Gerrie Nel, chief investigator in the case against national Police Commissioner Jackie Selebi, raised serious questions. But none are more disturbing than the reaction of the ANC’s National Working committee.

Apparently it is so expert at the task of prosecution that, even without knowledge of the police docket, it knows there is an answerable case. Furthermore, the committee suggests that Nel received preferential treatment because of his past. And it repeated complaints about charges brought against what it describes as cadres of the democratic movement.

There are worrying signs of megalomania in the upper echelons of the ANC. One indication is blatant disrespect for the judicial process accompanied by a persistent background chorus of threatened political interference. This goes to the very heart of constitutionalism. The judiciary, the media and all South Africans committed to democracy have a tough challenge ahead in its defence.
