Dangerous streetlight poles leave Sobantu residents frustrated

2012-12-24 00:00

COLLAPSING street poles with power cables attached are posing a danger to residents in Sobantu.

Termites have attacked the wooden poles and about 100 have been marked with white paint by the municipality to show that they need to be replaced.

Resident Lindiwe Mbeje said she feared for her life as some poles were about to fall on to their homes.

She said streetlights were also not working in the area.

“It’s the festive season. People may be robbed at night as no streetlights are working here in ‘Dark City’. We have been reporting it to the municipality since October and nothing has been happening.”

Bongiwe Sokhela, who lives in Zenzele Street, said the pole at the gate of her house was knocked down by a car last Saturday.

“The electricity cable is on my roof and I don’t know what will happen to me and my family.

“The municipality seems as though they don’t care about this problem. It’s been a week now.”

Another cable drooped so low over a road it could be touched.

Ward councillor Thandi Matiwane said she had reported it to the municipality and the management of the electricity department.

“The electricity department should be acting swiftly to correct these problems because it’s a disaster waiting to happen. I can’t tell the community what is happening with the poles and street lights as I don’t have the answers,” she said, adding that a street pole was even blocking her own driveway.

“I reported it in November last year, but they have not come to remove the pole,” she said.

Municipal spokesperson Nqobile Madonda said they will be attending to complaints.

“Our electricity department will be attending to the problems.”
