Daniel burns up the Greenes again

2011-02-08 00:00

NOT content with shooting the lights out at Victoria Country Club last year, Daniel Greene went low again last week, shooting a 10-under 60 at his home course at Gowrie Farm.

The lanky professional was playing alongside his father in last Friday’s competition on the Nottingham Road track.

“I was playing off the club tees, but the wind definitely got up when we were playing,”Greene told The Witness yesterday.

He emphasised just how strong the gust got up by the way he had to play the normally short, par-five second.

“Usually I hit driver and then nine-iron there. But on Friday I had to hit a four-iron in, so it was really blowing.”

Greene, who was a few good weeks shy of hoisting the Rookie of the Year title on the Sunshine Tour, is on a short break from the rigours of tour life.

“I was just playing with the old man because I have some time off before the next tournament,” he said.

His 10-under round was split into a pair of five-under nines, and he even had the chance to shoot a magical 59.

“I missed a sitter on the 13th; it couldn’t have been more than half a metre,”he lamented.

Greene had a final chance to break 60 on the par-five18th.

Needing an eagle, he pulled his second under a greenside tree.

“I actually did well to get up and down for birdie from there, and it was a nice way to end the round. The putter was definitely working.”
