Davids leaves, Lentjies returns to Team of Choice

2014-01-14 00:00

MARITZBURG United legend and assistant coach Fadlu Davids has left the club to reunite with former mentor Ernst Middendorp at Bloemfontein Celtic.

Club chairperson Farook Kadodia told The Witness yesterday that when new coach Steve Komphela joined the side, he brought with him Mandla Ncikazi to serve as his assistant.

“We told Fadlu that he could stay, and the coach would have two assistant coaches. But he felt he would learn more under Ernst,” said Kadodia.

Davids, who has played the most games and scored the most goals in the club’s history, could have joined Middendorp after the German left United for Celtic, but the former striker decided to honour his contract with the Team of Choice.

Since the sacking of ex-coach Clinton Larsen in December, Davids is the second member of the club’s technical team to jump ship after goalkeeper coach Arthur Bartman came out of retirement to sign for struggling bottom side Golden Arrows.

Kadodia also confirmed yesterday that Kurt Lentjies would be returning to the club. The 28-year-old Capetonian was signed by United from Mamelodi Sundowns in 2010 before he moved on to Bloemfontein Celtic at the beginning of last season and then finally to SuperSport United at the start of this campaign.

Kadodia said Lentjies was expected to join up with the squad today.
