De Jager upset as Anderson ditches SA

CAPE TOWN — South Africa’s Davis Cup captain John-Laffnie de Jager is upset that the country’s number one tennis player, Kevin Anderson, again turned his back on the team.

De Jager on Monday named his team to face Monaco in a Euro/Africa Zone Group 2 tie at the Irene Country Club in Pretoria from January 31 to February 2.

Anderson’s name was again missing from the list which includes Izak van der Merwe, Rik de Voest, Raven Klaasen, Ruan Roelofse and Nikala Scholtz.

De Jager told the Beeld website that Anderson refrained from responding to an e-mail which asked if he was available.

De Jager said he recently spoke to Anderson at the Australian Open but the Davis Cup issue wasn’t brought up.

“While he’s busy playing in a tournament like this, he doesn’t want to talk about the Davis Cup. It doesn’t look like it’s a priority.

“If I’m the reason why Kevin doesn’t want to play for South Africa, he has to be man enough to say it. And should that be the case, then I’ll resign as captain tomorrow.

“I know money is a problem because Kevin wants a considerable amount more than the other players to play.

“Then there’s also talk of him playing Davis Cup tennis for America in future. He qualifies to play for the USA in 2015.”
