De Niro to be honoured

LOS ANGELES – Double Oscar winner Robert De Niro will soon add another accolade to his legendary, 40-year movie career.

The actor will be given a lifetime achievement award at the Golden Globes in January, joining the ranks of previous honorees including Steven Spielberg, Al Pacino, Barbra Streisand and Anthony Hopkins, organisers said on Tuesday.

De Niro, 67, has made more than 70 movies in a career that started in 1968. He won Oscars for his role as the young Vito Corleone in The Godfather, Part II, and boxer Jake LaMotta in Raging Bull. The actor later surprised audiences with his comedic turns in the Meet the Parents franchise.

De Niro also founded the Tribeca film festival in 2001 as a bid to revitalise lower Manhattan after the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center, and to promote New York City as a filmmaking center.

 

 

LOS ANGELES – Mel Gibson headed to a Los Angeles courtroom on Wednesday for a custody hearing involving his infant daughter. The Academy Award-winner arrived for the closed hearing about 10 minutes before his ex-girlfriend, Russian musician Oksana Grigorieva.

The former couple have been sparring for months over custody and financial issues after reaching a private agreement. It is the first time Gibson has personally appeared in court on the case.

 

LOS ANGELES – Twilight stole the limelight at the People’s Choice nominations on Tuesday with eight nods for its Eclipse instalment and stars Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner.

In an awards show that also celebrates the most popular stars in music and television, musical comedy Glee and its cast earned five nominations, and singers Katy Perry, Eminem and Lady Gaga also made a strong showing.

The nominations were selected by 35 million votes cast by U.S. pop culture fans.

Winners of the People’s Choice Awards will be chosen by public voting online at www.PeoplesChoice.com. Voting in most categories will end on December 7.

The People’s Choice Awards, hosted by Queen Latifah, takes place in Los Angeles on January 5.

 

LOS ANGELES – A spokesman for troubled teen idol Demi Lovato denied on Wednesday that the Disney actress was being treated for drug or alcohol addiction, following claims in the media that she had a history of heavy drinking and cocaine use.

The cocaine claims came from some celebrity publications a week after Lovato, 18, pulled out of a concert tour and went into rehab for what were described as long-standing “emotional and physical issues”.

“Demi Lovato is not in treatment for drug or alcohol addiction. As we have said since she entered treatment last week, Demi decided to seek help for emotional and physical issues she has battled throughout her life,” her spokesman Jesse Derris said in a statement.

Representatives for the star of Disney Channel’s Sonny with a Chance and Camp Rock, said last week that she was bullied in school and had a history of eating disorders and cutting herself.

 

LOS ANGELES – Oscar-winning British actress Rachel Weisz and her film director partner Darren Aronofsky have split up after nine years, their representatives said on Tuesday.

Weisz, 40, who won a best supporting actress Oscar for the 2005 movie The Constant Gardener, and Aronofsky, 41, the director of The Wrestler and new release Black Swan were together for nine years but did not marry. They have a four year-old son together.

“Rachel Weisz and Darren Aronofsky have been separated for some months. They remain close friends and are committed to raising their son together,” their publicists said in a joint statement.

Celebrity website TMZ.com, quoting unnamed sources, said on Tuesday that Weisz has been romantically linked with James Bond star Daniel Craig, her co-star in the upcoming thriller Dream House. That report could not be confirmed.

 

LOS ANGELES – Taylor Swift, 20, has become the youngest person ever to win the BMI country songwriter of the year award, just a week after a bumper charts debut for her new album Speak Now.

Swift also took home the award for country song of the year for You Belong With Me at the Broadcast Music (BMI) awards ceremony in Nashville on Tuesday night.

 

NEW YORK – Katy Perry and Justin Bieber will perform at a show to announce the Grammy nominations, organisers for the top music awards said on Wednesday.

The 16-year-old Bieber and Perry, whose song California Gurls has been among the top U.S. pop hits of the year, will be joined on stage by country singer Miranda Lambert, rapper B.o.B and singer-songwriter Bruno Mars. B.o.B and Mars collaborated together this year for the single, Nothin’ On You.

 

WASHINGTON – Comedian Tina Fey, whose parody of former Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin some say influenced the 2008 U.S. presidential election, accepted the Mark Twain prize for American Humor on Tuesday before a packed audience at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

An all-star line-up of comedy luminaries from fellow Twain Prize winner Steve Martin to Betty White saluted Fey for her pioneering role as the first lead female writer on Saturday Night Live to her Emmy Award-winning comedy 30 Rock.

 

LOS ANGELES - Actress Lindsay Lohan, whose drug and alcohol problems have derailed her career in recent years, wants to open her own treatment centre after her current court-ordered rehab stint, her mother said on Monday.

Lohan, 24, has gained an unusual degree of expertise on her planned business, having undergone at least five stints in rehab facilities over the last three years.

Her latest, in the world-famous Betty Ford Centre, began last month after a random drug test found cocaine and methamphetamine in her system. Due to be released on January 2, Lohan plans to use her celebrity to help educate other young people battling addiction issues, her mother, Dina Lohan, told NBC Television.

ROBERT Downey Jr has traded his metal suit for a peanut shell. The Iron Man star is appearing in a new advert as the voice of the iconic Planters Peanuts mascot, Mr Peanut. It’s the first time the anthropomorphic nut with a top hat, monocle and cane has ever spoken.

Kraft Foods, parent of Planters Peanuts, introduced the new ad on the Internet on Tuesday.
