Dealer caught in sting

2011-08-26 00:00

A WELL-KNOWN Northdale drug dealer was arrested at his house in a six-hour sting operation by the Pietermaritzburg crime intelligence unit and the Directorate of the Priority Crime Investigation yesterday.

The dealer, whose name is withheld until he appears in court, has been on the investigators’ radar for seven months.

He will appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court today with his wife and five of his alleged pushers.

Captain Rumen Maistry, who led the sting, had made several purchases of drugs from the dealer in the months leading up to his arrest.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Joey Jeevan said the dealer has been arrested several times before.

She said he has been dealing in drugs for over 20 years.

“He has been operating in three houses — his main house and two others across the road.

“During the seven months undercover cops have purchased drugs worth R25 000 from him and yesterday we saw the opportunity to swoop as all of them were present,” said Jeevan.

“Some of his pushers are minors.”

Crack cocaine, ecstasy and mandrax worth an estimated value of R40 000 were confiscated from the houses.

Utensils used to smoke these drugs were also confiscated.
