Death in head-on collision

2010-01-27 00:00

A PASSENGER of a vehicle died on the scene after the Honda Ballade he was travelling in collided head-on with a Land Cruiser on Cedara Road in Hilton yesterday evening, which was one of about 15 accidents that happened last night due to heavy rains.

The driver of the Honda was taken to hospital in a critical condition.

According to eyewitnesses, the Land Cruiser was travelling towards town and the other vehicle was heading in the opposite direction. The Honda is said to have collided with the Land Cruiser, with the impact spinning it around.

ER24 emergency personnel used advanced life support intervention to stabilise the driver before taking him to Edendale Hospital. He was in a critical condition.

The two occupants of the Land Cruiser were taken to a private hospital in Pietermaritzburg.

ER24 spokesman Derrick Banks said the misty and rainy conditions could have been one of the main factors behind the accident.

A resident in the area, Dan le Cordeur, said it was sad that the passenger had to die like that, adding that the street is an accident zone. He said crashes happen on a weekly basis on that stretch of road, which is about one kilometre from Crossways Pub, and that most of the accidents can be attributed to speeding.

“There’s a downhill section followed by a sharp curve at the bottom. People come down at high speed, and that makes it difficult to control their vehicles on the curve.”

“I’ve seen many accidents here, but no life has been lost until today,” said Le Cordeur.

He said speed humps on that section of the road might help.
