Death toll worries Zululand mayor

2010-11-30 00:00

THE Zululand District Municipality is considering installing giant lightning conductors to protect vulnerable communities from lightning strikes, district mayor Blessed Gwala said yesterday.

Gwala was reacting to the deaths of seven people in Pongola on Friday when lightning struck a marquee where a creche Christmas party was being held.

The KZN government is to pay for a mass funeral this weekend, Themba Ngema, spokesperson for Social Development MEC Meshack Radebe, said yesterday.

Gwala said the district authorities have grown increasingly worried about lightning strikes.

“We are concerned that there are areas within this district which seem to be regular lightning spots. In the last three months alone, we have lost 15 people, including the latest victims, all to lightning which strikes at these spots.

“We have therefore resolved and are in the process of considering the installation of big lightning conductors in all these areas so as to protect our people from becoming victims of this unfortunate natural disaster.”
