Deccan Road Primary pupils wow judges

2014-10-13 00:00

DECCAN Road Primary School pupils wowed the judges at the NutriDay Schools Programme Build-Off, earning them third place in the competition in Johannesburg on Saturday.

The school was one of the six out of 1 200 that participated in the NutriDay Schools Programme that made it to the finals.

The team consisted of pupils Mekyl Naidoo, Keliyah Ramnerain, Priyanka Singh, Cameron Gareeb, Nick Moodley, Semaal Moodley, Thenir Sawneth, Jaryd David Francis, their teacher Jessica Devan and HDI school liaison officer Shannon Naidoo.

They came together to create a 3D model of Nelson Mandela. The model titled “From Prisoner to President” was built out of 2 500 empty NutriDay yogurt tubs.

Devan said that the students felt honoured to represent their province.

“The build-off event was awesome and to represent KwaZulu-Natal was an honour. It was a great opportunity especially because for some of the children it was the first time they had flown in an aeroplane,” Devan said. “I’m very proud of the children because they worked very well under the pressure and managed to complete the model within the two-hour time frame.”

The school received a R5 000 cash prize. Devan said that they would be using the money towards their new building project, consisting of a new library and the addition of three new classrooms.

Wesley Chetty, brand manager for NutriDay, explained that the judges had an extremely difficult time in choosing the winner because the standard of building was extremely high.
