Defence force chef found hacked to death in kwaMsane

2012-11-19 00:00

THE body of a 121 Battalion chef, who had the rank of corporal, was found in the kwaMsane area near Mtubatuba on Friday.

According to the police, 49-year-old Bonginkosi Gumede was hacked to death with a bush knife.

kwaMsane SAPS spokesperson Captain Jabulani Mdletshe said Gumede was found with injuries to his head and neck.

“We found the corpse about a kilometre from where he was hacked. We are still investigating the matter and hope to make arrests soon,” he said.

Gumede’s body was discovered by colleague Sifiso Ngcobo, who told The Witness that he found his friend’s body on his doorstep.

“I was on my way to the bathroom and found him lying in front of my doorstep, with blood dripping all over,” said Ngcobo.

According to Ngcobo, Gumede was based in Durban, but was serving at Mtubatuba on a temporary basis.

He was set to return to Durban on the day he was found dead.

Gumede’s brother, Philani, described him as a loving family man who was married with two children aged four and six.

“What has happened hurts deeply,” Philani said.

“We hope the police will arrest the culprits as quickly as possible,” he added.

Mdletshe said a case of murder had been opened. He urged people with information on the matter to come forward.
