Democracy: Public invited to launch of report

2008-05-28 00:00

The public are invited to the launch of a report that deals with experience of democracy in uMgungundlovu District. The launch takes place today at the Cathedral of Holy Nativity, 169 Langalibalele Street, from 9.30 am.

The report is based on a survey carried out by the Pietermaritzburg Agency for Christian Social Awareness. Six communities in Umgungundlovu District Municipality took part in the six-month survey. The researchers raised the following general questions:

Is democracy is working for communities in Pietermaritzburg?

Do they share equally in the fruits of South Africa’s independence, including security, political tolerance, respect for human rights and gender equality?

How do they rate the power of their votes — and the suitability of the councillors who win them? Do people have a say in decisions or do they use violence to deal with issues?
