Deracialise: Nkwinti calls on farmers

2011-07-01 00:00

MINISTER of Rural Development and Land Reform Gugile Nkwinti has called on black and white farmers to deracialise the rural economy and stand together in speaking and defending their property and farming interests.

His call for unity in the agricultural sector comes as the ANCYL president Julius Malema’s utterances on land reform fuels the racial divide. Malema has called for expropriation of land without compensation.

Nkwinti was outlining his views on various models on the land reform process during a meeting with the Agriculture Business Chamber in Pretoria this week. He said the success of the process depends on co-operation between the stakeholders assisting land reform beneficiaries and emerging farmers, and cannot be done by government alone.

He emphasised the benefit of interacting with farmers to enable government’s ability to achieve land reform targets, saying: “Closing the gap through talking solves many problems”.

He said the deracialisation of the rural economy, democratic land allocation and use across gender, race and class, and strict production discipline for guaranteed food security, are central. — WR.
