Derby-Lewis has lung cancer

2014-04-09 00:00

CLIVE Derby-Lewis (78) will apply for medical parole after being diagnosed with aggressive lung cancer.

“Ironically, it is thanks to the fact that a fellow inmate stabbed him with a piece of glass that his doctor discovered the lung cancer. It is at an advanced stage,” his wife, Gaye, said yesterday.

Under a court order, Derby-Lewis is being treated in a Pretoria private hospital for stab wounds suffered when he was attacked twice in two weeks last month.

The most recent wound penetrated his lung. Staff at the Kgosi Mampuru prison stitched the wound without realising Derby-Lewis was bleeding internally. When he was in hospital for treatment of an arm wound, an emergency operation was carried out after he started choking on his own blood. The cancer was discovered during the surgery.

“We are waiting for a full report later in the week with which we will apply for his release on medical parole,” said Gaye.

She said they don’t expect special treatment, just the “human rights that apply to other prisoners”.

Derby-Lewis has been previously treated for skin and prostate cancer, and has been repeatedly denied parole, despite it being recommended by the parole board in 2008.
