Designers put on the ritz for race day

THE hall at the School of Fashion Design in Retief Street was thronged with models and students who have designed dazzling garments for the Golden Horse Casino Sprint Race Day competition for designers to be held this Saturday.

The principal of the school, Priscilla Bhika, said the students are excited to be taking part in the biggest fashion event in the midlands.

There are six categories: most striking couple, best young designer, best-dressed person, best headgear, best hairstyle and avant-garde. The school is participating in all of them under the theme Out of this World.

Bhika said this year’s theme has made the challenge more glamorous and creative.

“The students had lots of fun doing this and had lots of ideas.

“They even made their own jewellery, shoes, and most of them dressed their models from head to toe,” she added.

Last year the school scooped 28 of the 40 awards in the competition. The school is hoping to do even better this weekend.

One of the designers is Nabeelah Dadabhay (22) of Bisley who is doing her second year.

Dadabhay designed a black gown featuring feathers and a mask.

“I think I’ve brought glamour to my outfit and stuck to the theme. I worked really hard,” she added.

One designer who thinks his creation will win him the “striking couple award” is the confident Nkosi Mhlungo (25), who designed his outfits around record and CD decorations.

Mhlungo said he is inspired by his love for music.

The event fashion co-ordinator, Kevin Ellis, told The Witness, “Designers and hairdressers are working hard to make sure that they win this competition. I’ve been running around giving lectures to different schools to explain what the theme is all about.”

The organisers are expecting about 200 to 300 participants.
