Dialing 10111 doesn’t yield any response

2014-01-14 00:00

AFTER reporting suspicious activity to police using the 10111 number on Saturday, Lorenzo Francheschi was appalled to learn that his call did not prompt the police to action.

Francheschi, who lives in the CBD, saw two men walking very slowly in the street and their behaviour seemed suspicious to him.

“I own a motorbike repair shop and have had four attempted break-ins in the last month. I know guys are after aluminium, so when I saw these guys walking and stopping at the different businesses, it looked as if they were casing the places,” said Francheschi.

His suspicions were confirmed when he saw one of the men jump a fence into the yard of a panel beating shop. He then called the 10111 number to report what he saw.

“The guy came back; he probably didn’t find what he was looking for. They walked on to Berg Street. I felt something was wrong, so I followed them.”

While following the men, Francheschi spotted a K9 unit vehicle, flagged them down and told them what he saw. The officers called the men over, searched them and asked them what they were doing. They didn’t have any stolen goods on them and were let go.

“I told the police that I had called the 10111 number to tell them what I saw, and they said that they didn’t hear anything on the radio. I was so disappointed. What if I was reporting a murder?” Francheschi told The Witness.

Colonel Jay Naicker of the SAPS said “allegations of members failing to assist victims of crime is viewed in a serious light” and urged the complainant to contact the commander of the 10111 centre so that the matter can be fully investigated.
