ANNUAL MEETINGS

The annual general meeting of the Friends of the Tatham Art Gallery (FOTAG) will be held on November, 30 at 5.30 pm in the Coffee Shop at the Tatham Art Gallery immediately after the gallery’s board of trustees AGM. Parking will be available in the Parliament garden.

ARTS AND CRAFTS

A Bags Bazaar will open at Midlands Arts and Crafts Society (Macs) at Macs House, 23 Haldane Road, Pietermaritzburg, tomorrow from 9 am to 2 pm and will continue during the normal weekly opening hours until Christmas. There is an eclectic collection of handmade bags using cotton, merino fleece, other sheep breeds and silk, wet-felted, sewn and knitted, in all shapes and sizes - something to suit everyone. The Witness Craft Bazaar will take place at Liberty Midlands Mall’s Edgars Court from November 24 to 27. The bazaar will run from 9 am to 6 pm each day, except Sunday when it will close at 5 pm. Msunduzi/Voortrekker Museum is hosting an exhibition of quilts done by The Natal Quilters Guild until the middle of January 2012. All the quilts have a theme architecture. Pietermaritzburg SPCA is hosting a special Christmas morning market on December 3 at the SPCA grounds, 235 Woodhouse Road, from 8 am to 12 noon. The Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust is hosting a Christmas Craft and Flea Market in partnership with the café/restaurant Voluptuous Blue and designer furniture store Design FX at 24 and 26 Old Main Road, Hillcrest, from 10 am to 4 pm on December 16. Hillcrest AIDS Centre’s craft project, Woza Moya, will be selling all sorts of beautiful jewellery, pottery, gift and Christmas decorations, and their Gardens of Hope nursery will be selling Christmas trees and a wide range of indigenous and foreign plants. CLUBS AND SOCIETIES

Durban Ramblers Hiking Club is hosting a walk along bike tracks in the Giba Gorge tomorrow. Meet at the car park at 1.45 pm. Entrance R10. There will be a BotSoc outing to Cumberland Private Reserve on Sunday. Meet at the reserve at 9 am. There is a R10 entry fee to pay at the entrance. Enjoy a botanical ramble at a gentle pace. Bring a picnic tea for mid-morning and stay for a lunch-time braai or picnic if you wish - braai fire will be supplied. Wear walking shoes, a hat, sunscreen and tick-repellant. The next meeting of the Hilton Garden Club will be at the Church of the Ascension Hall in Brindy Road, Hilton at 10 am for 10.30 am on December 6 (please note the change of date) and will be a bring and share lunch. Bikers and bike enthusiasts are raising funds for The Renken Cenrte at Wartburg (a home for mentally challenged adults) by hosting a fun bike ride at Klipdrift Farm, just outside Wartburg from 10 am to 1 pm (registration from 7 am to 10 am) on November 19. The course is suitable for Enduro Loop, Kiddies Loop, and Quads. Entry is R150. No gate entry for spectators. Marshals, ambulance and medics will be on site and their will be a lucky draw, beer garden, music and full catering. Coastlands Hotel in Umhlanga Ridge is hosting a ladies night fundraiser for Reach For A Dream on November 24 at 6.30 pm. The chariy fulfils the dreams of children suffering from life-threatening illnesses. This year’s event is not to be missed as Reach for a Dream is working in partnership with ‘The Bedroom’ which promises to be a fun-filled night of goodies, naughtiness and giveaways. The Lutheran Church, on the corner of Bester Road and Military Way in Hayfields, is hosting an Advent Evening at 5.30 pm on November 25. There will be a children’s lantern walk at 6.30 pm and Carols by Candlelight at 7 pm. Kaffeestube, traditional German cakes, a light supper, Christmas decorations, advent wreaths and raffles will be available. Ten percent of the proceeds will be donated to charity.

Msunduzi Hospice’s charity shop has mopved to 200 Zwartkop Rd, Prestbury, and is open week days from 8 am to 3.45 pm and Saturdays from 8 am to 1 pm. Inquiries: 033 344 1560.

The Hospice Coffee shop at Hospice House, Pietermaritzburg is open. Visitors can choose from a selection of mouth-watering sweet and savoury treats, soft drinks, teas and coffees. Daily free-flying raptor displays can be seen at the African Bird of Prey Sanctuary on the Lion Park Road (exit 65 off the N3 highway). GROUPS

A support group for people caring for a loved one who is terminally ill meets at 4 Old Howick Road, Athlone, Pietermaritzburg from 10 am to 11.30 am on the last Wednesday of the month. The support group aims to provide a forum for carers to meet with other people in similar situations to share experiences, support one another, share tips, and take time out to socialise with others who understand what you are going through in a non-judgmental atmosphere of acceptance, care and understanding. Glenwood Food and Craft Lovers Market in Bulwer park on Sunday between 9 am and 2 pm. Darryl Hofmann and the team from the Glenwood Community Forum have put together a day-long event involving good food, family activities and all things festive. MUSEUMS

This month’s KwaZulu-Natal Museum talk, titled Aspects of the late Iron Age in KwaZulu-Natal’will be delivered by Gavin Whitelaw, chief curator of the human sciences department (archaeology), at the KwaZulu-Natal Museum in the Ingede Theatre at the museum at 237 Jabu Ndlovu (Loop) Street, Pietermaritzburg on December 3 at 10.45 am. A light finger lunch will be served after the talk so that you can meet some of the museum staff and learn more about what they do behind the scenes. The Voortrekker/Msunduzi Museum is celebrating its centenary in 2012 and is in the process of upgrading some exhibitions. The Museum needs items reflecting the city’s history, especially sport and political history. The Museum is also upgrading exhibitions at 333 Boom Street and need items from the Anglo-Boer War. MUSIC
