ARTS AND CRAFTS

Msunduzi/Voortrekker Museum is hosting an exhibition of quilts done by The Natal Quilters Guild until the middle of January 2012. All the quilts have a theme architecture. The Pietermaritzburg Computer Club meets at the Olwazini Discovery Centre (Golden Horse Casino) on the first Wednesday of each month at 7.30 pm. Msunduzi Hospice’s charity shop has moved to 200 Zwartkop Road, Prestbury, and is open week days from 8 am to 3.45 pm and Saturdays from 8 am to 1 pm. Inquiries: 033 344 1560.

The Hospice Coffee shop at Hospice House, Pietermaritzburg is open. Visitors can choose from a selection of mouth-watering sweet and savoury treats, soft drinks, teas and coffees. Daily free-flying raptor displays can be seen at the African Bird of Prey Sanctuary on the Lion Park Road (exit 65 off the N3 highway). Open Tuesday to Sunday, the shows take place at 10.30 am and 3 pm. With jungle gyms and bunnies to feed, a gift shop and gallery, tea garden, picnic area and gobbly, squabbly vulture feeding sessions there’s something for everyone. GROUPS

A support group for people caring for a loved one who is terminally ill meets at 4 Old Howick Road, Athlone, Pietermaritzburg from 10 am to 11.30 am on the last Wednesday of the month. The support group aims to provide a forum for carers to meet with other people in similar situations to share experiences, support one another, share tips, and take time out to socialise with others who understand what you are going through in a non-judgmental atmosphere of acceptance, care and understanding. HOLIDAY PROGRAMMES

The KZN ScienCentre at the Gateway Theatre of Shopping is hosting a 'Science Makes Sense' holiday programme in the December holidays. Running until January 10, the programme offers a multitude of fun, interactive and educational activities that will explore the five senses, exhibiting how science is involved in what we experience everyday through sight, touch, taste, hear and smell. Those who attend will be able to compete in the optical obstacle workshop, and will get to try read by touch in the brilliant braille workshop. With tastes, children will discover the microscopic world on our tongues, and learn how nifty neurons help science make sense. The South African Guide Dog Association will also be showcasing their abilities by leading people through a darkened room, and children will also be educated about these wonderful animals. Ten percent of the gate entry for the holiday period will go to the South African Guide Dog Association. The holiday programme will run from 11 am to 2 pm daily. Inquiries: 031 566 8040.

MEDITATION

Meditation for positive thinking and a peaceful mind - weekly classes on Thursday evenings from 5.30 pm to 6.30 pm at the Yellowwood Cafe in Howick. POETRY

The Bat Centre in Durban’s small craft harbour holds regular poetry sessions for Nowadays Poets on Wednesdays and Basadzi Women of Poetry on Thursdays in the functions room. These sessions run from 5 pm to 7 pm. Inquiries: 031 332 0451.

TOURS
