AUDITIONS

Auditions are to be held for the Durban Passion Play, which is based on the Oberammergau Passion Play in Bavaria, at Holy Family College in Glenmore from 10 am on August 21. The Passion Play is a dramatic re-enactment of the events leading up to the death of Jesus Christ and of his resurrection; and around 30 performances of the play will be taking place during Easter 2011 in the Playhouse Drama Theatre. All participants volunteer their time and there is no reimbursement. Own transport is essential. Rehearsals will commence at Holy Family College in October.

ARTS AND CRAFTS

A workshop-type programme is being run for current matric art students, from a home-based studio in Scottsville. Tuition is offered by former graphic design lecturer, Denise Essom. The workshop is structured to enable students to produce really good show stopper artwork examples to boost the matric art exhibitions and practical portfolios. Msunduzi Hospice’s coffee shop, The Courtyard, in Swartkorpz Road, Pietermaritzburg, is open daily from Monday to Saturday. CLUBS AND SOCIETIES

The South African Writers' Circle meets at 11 am tomorrow at the Westville Library. Ginny Porter and Wendy Greef will be speaking about the Current Trends in Writing, as perceived at the Cape Town Book Fair. There will also be an opportunity for writers and people interested in writing to bring and share their writing. Each writer will be allowed two minutes to recite their work. COURSES

Birdlife KZN Midlands will be hosting a bird appreciation course in Pietermaritzburg during September and October. The course starts on September 2 with an introduction to birding and how to identify birds, courtesy of Mark Brown. Other subjects to be covered include top KZN birds and where to find them, raptors, garden birds, night birds, glassland birds, woodland birds, wetland birds, shore birds and much more. The course will take place at the Zoology Lecture Theatre in the John Bews building at UKZN Pietermaritzburg in Carbis Road. Richmond, Byrne and District Museum is hosting a celebration of the 150th anniversay of the arrival of indentured Indian settlers and the 160th anniversary of the 1850 Byrne settlers in the museum ground from 9 am to 3 pm on August 28.
