Did Bozizé secretly meet JZ?

2013-08-26 00:00

FRANCOIS Bozizé, the ousted Central African Republic (CAR) dictator, yesterday placed a diplomatic hot potato in President Jacob Zuma’s lap by saying he had held secret meetings with Zuma.

His statement during an interview with the Sunday Times caused so much discomfort in political circles that the presidential spokesperson referred all queries to the spokesperson for defence.

Since Bozizé was deposed in a coup in January that caused the deaths of 15 South African soldiers, his whereabouts had been unknown.

The Sunday Times reported that the once mighty Bozizé has been traced to a cheap hotel in Paris, France. His allegations about secretly meeting Zuma could have major implications, especially as questions as to why the South African army was protecting key points in CAR remain to be answered.

Bozizé said Zuma had agreed that South Africa would supply large quantities of weaponry and soldiers to support Bozizé in his battle with the rebels.

Bozizé did not say what advantage South Africa or its citizens would have gained from such support, but his allegations caused spokespersons to scurry for cover.

The presidential spokesperson Mac Maharaj said he did not want anything to do with the whole affair.
