Did Parreira dupe SA?

2008-04-26 00:00

THE SA Football Association will not quiz former Bafana Bafana coach Carlos Alberto Parreira about a statement he made to a Brazilian newspaper that appears to contradict the reason he gave for resigning from the national team.

Parreira’s shock resignation was announced at Safa House in Johannesburg on Monday, with the coach citing his desire to return to Brazil to attend to seriously ill wife Leila, who has cancer, as the main reason.

However, in an interview with Brazilian paper

O Globo, Parreira denied that his wife’s health was the reason for quitting.

“Leila is fine. She had problems, but she is fine now … The problem is something else … I am far away from everyone, from my grandchildren. I could not stand it any longer,” he said.

Safa president Molefi Oliphant said Safa does not intend questioning Parreira over this discrepancy.

“We received a letter in which the coach said he wished to be relieved of his job and we accepted his reasons and his resignation. As far as we are concerned, the matter is now closed,” Oliphant said yesterday.

Asked if the statement made by Parreira does not contradict the contents of the coach’s resignation letter, Oliphant said: “That has nothing to do with us”.
