Die-hard: 50-year-old samaritan fights off knife-wielding robbers

HIS attackers attempted to drown him, and then even stabbed him — but his will to survive proved too much.

The 50-year-old man, whose identity is withheld for safety concerns, was attacked on Thursday afternoon while driving near the Damba river crossing in the Southport area. The victim was apparently flagged down by two men.

When he stopped to help, one of them grabbed and assaulted him through the open driver’s window.

The second suspect gained entry to the vehicle through the passenger door. According to Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid of the SAPS Port Shepstone, the victim managed to get out of his car and fought with his attackers. He fell into the river during the assault. The suspects attempted to drown the man while stabbing him with a knife.

“He managed to miraculously survive the attack and really gave his attackers a good fight,” said

Wiid. The victim sustained a laceration to his throat and minor cuts to his hands. The two suspects fled with his wallet, binoculars and cellphone.

One of the attackers is apparently known and he has approached the victim for work twice previously. A robbery case is being investigated by Southport police and officers are searching for the two attackers.
