Different story: Mavundla pleads not guilty

2009-10-30 00:00

NOT guilty. That’s the plea Godfrey Mavundla entered before court yesterday.

The businessman and ANC councillor in the uMvoti (Greytown) Municipality appeared in the Greytown Regional Court yesterday on charges of malicious damage to property after he allegedly set alight a R2-million timber truck last week.

Mavundla, who owns a sugar farm, admitted to journalists that he burnt the truck that had been hired to collect timber at an adjacent farm after he found it driving over his cane. He said he and the farmer did not get along and four weeks before he burnt the truck, the farmer, Richard Cyrus, killed his 12 dogs. The truck does not belong to Cyrus.

Although Mavundla admitted to reporters on Wednesday that he burnt the timber truck, he pleaded not guilty to the charge of malicious damage to property.

Police spokeswoman Inspector Joey Jeevan confirmed that Mavundla was released on R10 000 bail. His passport was confiscated as he is considered a flight risk. He will be going back to court on November 29.
