Dignitaries, media descend on grieving school

2015-01-30 00:00

HUNDREDS of pupils at Fezokuhle Primary School were left bewildered as the media and dignitaries from the KwaZulu-Natal government descended on their school yesterday.

Seven children from the school were killed when a bakkie transporting them crashed into a house on Wednesday.

Hordes of media representatives from all over the province descended on the school in Imbali Unit 18.

Msunduzi Mayor Chris Ndlela, Transport, Community Safety and Liaison MEC Willies Mchunu and Education MEC Peggy Nkonyeni offered their condolences to the pupils and teachers.

The delegation then headed to the house where the accident occurred, where the MECs took questions from the media, before proceeding to Edendale Hospital where three accident victims remain in the intensive care unit and five others recover in the surgical ward.

In the surgical ward, one mother whose two daughters were injured in the accident sat beside her children’s beds, head in her hands and sobbing.

Ndlela, Mchunu and uMgungundlovu District Mayor Yusuf Bhamjee walked from bed to bed, offering support to the despairing families before making their way to the city hall to meet the families of the dead children.
