Dirtbags! Criminals 'have a dodgy new plan to fool homeowners'

2008-10-07 00:00

You may refuse to believe it, but Hilton residents have been warned of a new modus operandi for criminals and it’s allegedly not a load of rubbish.

In their latest newsletter, police warn residents of a new tactic criminals use to dupe homeowners.

According to the report, criminals dress in black, cover themselves in black bin bags and enter private properties.

They crouch down on the ground and to the unsuspecting passer-by, they look just like full rubbish bags.

Their streetwise camouflage allows them to hide in properties where they can then hijack residents, or trash their homes.

They even fool police and neighbourhood watch members, according to the warning.

Residents were warned to beware of “moving” black bags — particularly on rubbish removal days.

Police spokesman Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram said he has no knowledge of any modus operandus like this.

He said no cases of criminals posing as rubbish bags have been reported in or around Pietermaritzburg.

It is believed the alert emanates from a crime warning e-mail sent from somewhere in Gauteng.
