District sets up disaster management forum

2009-08-28 00:00

THE recent launch of the uMgungundlovu District Municipality’s (UMDM) disaster management advisory forum was a productive affair that saw stakeholders put forward action plans to improve disaster management in their areas.

Representatives from Umgeni Water, government departments, NGOs, the police, municipalities and the SA Weather Service met to set out terms of reference and discuss ways to ensure the sustainability of the forum.

The forum aims to put contingency measures in place for quick responses when emergencies disrupt the government’s normal service delivery to communities in the district.

UMDM municipal manager S’bu Khuzwayo said the stakeholders want to see the forum aligned with the integrated development plan and linked to provincial and national government. “We already have a strong agenda and are making headway,” he added.

UMDM Mayor Yusuf Bhamjee said the forum “will try to harness all volunteers and people who have a passion to try and improve people’s quality of life”. It will focus on prevention, the response rate, risk assessment and incident management.

Experts will identified to join the forum, which will meet quarterly.
