Div won’t pick ‘B’-team for Namibia

2011-09-19 00:00

CAPE TOWN — It is unlikely that Bok coach Peter de Villiers will pick a so-called “B”-team for their clash against minnows Namibia in Auckland on Thursday.

De Villiers said he views every match like a final and doubts whether he would use the clash as an opportunity to give every member of his 30-man squad a chance to play in the World Cup competition.

This could come as a surprise for many, as the Namibians will probably lose against most of South Africa’s provincial teams, and with a potential gruelling two knockout games looming, the Boks could do with a rest.

After a much anticipated physical onslaught from Samoa in their last pool game, the Boks are likely to face Australia and New Zealand in back-to-back weeks in the quarter-finals and semi-finals, should they go through.

But the coach says they should rather use the match as an opportunity to help key players get match fit, as they haven’t played together an awful lot recently.

“Every chance should be used to get the players sharp and to let the combinations settle,” he said.
