Dogs die trying to escape fireworks

SPCA spokeswoman Maureen Vida said their kennels are overflowing with animals that were scared away from home by the big bangs of fireworks, and found wandering lost on the streets.

She urged people whose pets are missing to contact the SPCA urgently to claim their animals.

Vida said a total of 25 dogs were brought into the SPCA on Friday and Saturday nights.

“These are cared for animals that have clearly got owners.” She said they had to deal with some horrific tragedies, including a dog that ran straight through the window of its

Ashburton home and fled on to the highway, only to be run over and killed.

“Another sausage dog ran out of its yard and was attacked by two big dogs, but we treated it and its owners have now taken it to their private vet.”

Altogether five dogs were found dead on the N3, trying to run away from the fireworks. “It is such a sad time of the year for us. These were well-loved pets.” Vida said that animals behave differently when they are frightened. “You cannot anticipate what they will do.”

She said the good news was that four of the dogs were quickly reunited with their owners as they wore pet identification tags. Vida urged pet owners to fit their animals with the tags, available from the SPCA.

She said the SPCA will once again be putting pressure on council to amend its by-laws and to restrict the use of fireworks.
