Dolphins Cubs selectors looking ahead with young players

2012-12-29 00:00

THE 13 players who will represent the U19 Dolphins at the Cubs Franchise week in Stellenbosch were announced after the SA School teams had been named.

Eleven of the players played in the recent Coca Cola Khaya Majola U19 schools week in Potchefstroom. The other two have been out of school for a year, but are still eligible for the Cubs week in the Boland on January 5.

Two players, of Maritzburg College and Kearsney, will be in the Dolphins side, and the latter also have old boy Mark Airey, a KZN Coastal player in 2011, in the team. The other two Kearsney boys are Craig Kirsten, who was selected for the second year in the SA Schools side, and Tristan Tedder. The College boys are Daryn Dupavillon, awarded trophies for player of the week and top wicket taker, before being named an SA Schools player, and Sohail Mahmoud, a leg spinner, who was selected for the SA Colts XI.

The other player, who left Northwood at the end of 2011, is Tshepo Moreke.

The Dolphins’ team is a young one, with selectors obviously looking to the future. Tedder, Mahmoud, Lungi Ngidi (Hilton), Sibonela Makhanya (DHS) and Andile Phehlokwayo (Glenwood) are all 16.

They will also have experience in the team, with Kirsten, Airey, Dupavillon, Kyle Simmonds (Westville) and Senuran Muthusamy (Clifton) having represented the Dolphins Cubs side at the beginning of 2012. Prenelan Subrayen, an ex-Glenwood player and captain of the SA Schools side and the SA U19 squad, was also eligible for selection, but he is under scrutiny for illegal bowling

actions.

After the Cubs week, a South African U19 squad will be selected to play two Tests and five one-dayers against England U19. The first Test is at Newlands in Cape Town from January 27 to January 30 and the second in Paarl from February 3 to February 6. The ODI games are also all in the Western Cape. They take place on February 13 in Paarl, February 15 at Bellville, February 16 in Paarl again, February 19 in Stellenbosch and February 21 at Newlands.

Dolphins Cubs team: Mark Airey (19 ex-Kearsney), Ben Philpott (17 St Charles), Senuran Muthusamy (18 Clifton), Greg Oldfield (17 Michaelhouse), Sibonela Makhanya (16 DHS), Tristan Tedder (16 Kearsney), Andile Phehlokwayo (16 Glenwood), Kyle Simmonds (18 Westville), Sohail Mahmoud (16 Maritzburg College), Craig Kirsten (18 Kearsney), Daryn Dupavillon (18 Maritzburg College), Tshepo Moreke (19 ex-Northwood) and Lungi Ngidi (16 Hilton).
